Protein Shakes That Taste Like Home (Kopi, Milo, Bandung)

23 September 2026·3 min read·By The Walao Whey Kaki

Unflavoured whey with tap water tastes like chalk dissolved in disappointment. Chocolate whey is fine for a week and then it's just... chocolate whey. Again.

Meanwhile every flavour we actually grew up with is sitting right there. Here are six that work, all built on one scoop (~24g protein) unless stated.

1. Kopi protein shake

The one people ask for most.

  • 1 scoop vanilla or unflavoured whey
  • 1 shot espresso or 2 tsp instant coffee, cooled
  • 200ml milk or soy milk
  • Ice, blended

~32g protein. The trick is cooling the coffee first — hot liquid makes whey clump and go grainy, and no amount of shaking fixes it. Brew it the night before if you're a morning gym person.

Sweeten with a little condensed milk if you want the real kopi experience, and accept the sugar.

2. Milo dinosaur, grown-up version

  • 1 scoop chocolate whey
  • 2 tbsp Milo powder
  • 250ml cold milk
  • Ice, blended, then extra Milo dusted on top

~34g protein. The undissolved Milo on top is the entire point. Non-negotiable.

Milo is mostly sugar, so this is a treat rather than a daily driver — but as a post-training drink where you actually want the carbohydrate, it's genuinely reasonable.

3. Bandung protein

Weird on paper. Works.

  • 1 scoop vanilla or unflavoured whey
  • 200ml milk
  • 1 tbsp rose syrup
  • Ice, shaken

~31g protein. Tastes like a bandung that went to the gym. Rose syrup is sweet, so start with less than you think — one tablespoon is plenty.

4. Pandan coconut

  • 1 scoop vanilla whey
  • 150ml coconut milk (or 200ml coconut water for lighter)
  • 1/4 tsp pandan extract
  • Ice, blended

~26g protein. Coconut milk makes this rich — closer to a dessert than a drink. The coconut water version is thinner and better in the heat.

5. Teh tarik shake

  • 1 scoop vanilla whey
  • 1 strong black tea bag, brewed and fully cooled
  • 100ml evaporated milk + 100ml water
  • Ice, shaken hard

~32g protein. Shaking hard matters — the froth is the whole character of a teh tarik. Same cooling rule as the kopi.

6. The no-powder one: tau huay smoothie

For anyone who doesn't want powder at all.

  • 1 bowl tau huay (~6g)
  • 200ml soy milk (~6g)
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (~4g)
  • 1 banana
  • Ice, blended

~16g protein, entirely from food. Not a huge number, but it's a real snack that happens to carry protein, and it costs a couple of dollars.

Three rules that stop shakes being awful

1. Cool your liquids. Whey protein denatures and clumps in hot liquid. Every kopi or teh shake needs the coffee or tea properly cooled first. This is the single most common mistake.

2. Liquid in the blender first, powder second. Powder on the bottom cakes onto the blades and you'll be scraping it out.

3. Blend, don't shake, anything with banana, oats or nut butter. A shaker bottle can't handle solids and you'll get lumps.

On the sugar

Milo, condensed milk and rose syrup are sugar. That's not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to know the number.

A Milo dinosaur shake is around 350–400 calories with the added Milo, versus about 190 for the plain kopi version. Both are fine; they're just different drinks doing different jobs. If calories are the constraint, the kopi and teh tarik versions are the lean ones — the same logic as the protein-per-calorie column on our food table.

Which powder for these?

Vanilla or unflavoured is the most versatile — chocolate fights with rose and pandan. Unflavoured is best if you'll be adding your own sweet things anyway, since you control the sugar.

If dairy troubles you, all six work with soy milk, and isolate instead of concentrate removes most of the lactose.
