Kopitiam Breakfast Got Protein Meh? (Yes, If You Order Right)
Be honest. Your breakfast is carbs, sugar and caffeine — chee cheong fun and a kopi, or two pratas, or a bao on the way to the MRT. Then you spend the rest of the day trying to cram 120g of protein into dinner. Walao, no wonder it feels impossible.
Breakfast is the meal where most people here score lowest on protein, and it's also the easiest one to fix. You don't need to eat chicken breast at 7am like some influencer. You just need to order slightly differently.
The problem, in numbers
Typical kopitiam breakfasts and roughly what they give you:
| Order | Protein (approx) |
|---|---|
| Chee cheong fun | ~5g |
| 2 plain pratas | ~10g |
| Char siew bao (1) | ~7g |
| Fried bee hoon (plain) | ~6–8g |
| Kaya toast set (2 half-boiled eggs) | ~16g |
| Mee siam / mee rebus | ~10–15g |
| Nasi lemak (with egg + ikan bilis) | ~15–18g |
| Fish or pork porridge | ~15–20g |
| Thosai with dhal | ~10–12g |
See the pattern? Most sit between 5g and 12g. If you're aiming for 100g+ a day and breakfast gives you 6g, you've dug yourself a hole before the day even starts.
A reasonable target is 25–30g at breakfast. Nothing magic about that number — it's just your daily total divided sensibly across meals instead of dumped into dinner.
The cheat code: two half-boiled eggs
Almost every kopitiam sells them, they cost very little, and they add about 12g of protein to literally anything.
Chee cheong fun (5g) plus two half-boiled eggs is 17g. Fried bee hoon (7g) plus two eggs is 19g. Add a soy milk and you're at 25g. Done, and you changed almost nothing about what you like eating.
This single habit — add eggs to whatever you were already ordering — fixes more breakfasts than any special diet.
The kaya toast set is secretly fine
Here's the plot twist: the classic kaya toast set with two half-boiled eggs is already around 16g, which quietly beats most "healthier-looking" options. The eggs do all the work.
Make it a 25g breakfast: ask for an extra egg (+6g), or take soy milk instead of kopi (+7g), or both.
Ranked: what to actually order
Top tier (20g+ as ordered)
- Fish soup with rice or bee hoon — 20–30g. The best breakfast in any kopitiam, full stop, if they open early.
- Yong tau foo — pick the tau kwa, fish paste items, eggs and stuffed items; skip the fried flour ones. Easily 20–35g.
- Sliced fish or minced pork porridge, add egg — 20–25g, and gentle on an early stomach.
Good tier (with one small tweak)
- Kaya toast set + extra egg — ~22g.
- Nasi lemak + extra egg, keep the ikan bilis — ~22g. Those anchovies are seriously protein-dense.
- Wanton noodles — ~18–20g, ask for extra wanton or char siew.
- Thosai + dhal + an omelette thosai — dhal brings decent protein, and egg thosai brings more.
Needs help
- Chee cheong fun, plain prata, plain bee hoon, most baos — delicious, but treat them as the carb base and always bolt protein on top.
Drinks count more than you think
- Soy milk (unsweetened if they have it) — ~7g a cup. The single easiest upgrade at the drinks stall.
- Tau huay — ~5–8g, and it's dessert for breakfast. Shiok.
- Kopi or teh with condensed/evaporated milk — ~1–3g. Basically a treat, not a protein source.
- Milo with milk — a few grams, mostly sugar.
Swapping one kopi for one soy milk each morning is roughly 2kg of extra protein a year. Small hinge, big door.
If you eat at home
- Two eggs, any style, plus a glass of milk — ~19g in five minutes.
- Tau huay or Greek yoghurt with peanut butter — ~15–20g, zero cooking.
- Last night's leftovers — the most underrated breakfast in Singapore. Cold cai png chicken is still chicken.
- A shake, if you're genuinely rushing — not superior to food, just faster.
Why bother front-loading?
Two practical reasons, no magic involved.
It's arithmetic. If you need 120g and breakfast gives you 6g, lunch and dinner must average 57g each. That's a lot of food in two sittings. Get 25g at breakfast and the other meals become easy.
Protein is filling. A protein-heavier breakfast tends to keep you fuller than a purely carb one, which makes the 10.30am kaya bun less tempting. It's not a fat-loss trick — it just makes the day easier to steer.
The one-line version
Order what you already like, then add two half-boiled eggs and swap the kopi for soy milk. That's a 6g breakfast turned into a 25g breakfast, for a couple of dollars, without eating a single sad chicken breast.
